A GEO checklist is a list of checks that make your content easy for AI tools to find, trust and quote. GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
You need one because the clicks are moving. In a randomized study of 1,065 US users, AI Overviews cut outbound clicks by almost 39%. Zero-click searches rose from 54% to 72% (Agarwal and Sen, SSRN, 2026).
If the AI answer is where your buyer reads, the AI answer is where your brand has to show up.
Below are 12 checks. Each one is tied to a published study or to guidance from the platform itself.
Is GEO different from SEO?
Mostly no. GEO sits on top of SEO.
Google says so directly. Its own guidance states there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. You do not need special files, AI text files or new schema markup. A page has to be indexed and eligible for a normal search snippet (Google Search Central, updated December 2025).
What changes is the unit that wins. Search ranks pages. AI answers pull passages. So GEO is about writing passages a model can lift out and quote without losing the meaning.
Content checks: what makes a passage quotable?
The evidence points to six things: answer early, define clearly, use questions, name names, keep it readable and cover the whole topic.
Kevin Indig studied 1.2 million ChatGPT answers and 18,012 verified citations. His findings drive checks 1 to 5 (Search Engine Land, February 2026; original: Growth Memo).
1. Put the answer in the first third of the page. 44.2% of citations came from the first 30% of the content. Only 24.7% came from the last third. If your answer sits under three paragraphs of setup, the model reads past it.
For a deeper look at how AI picks which passages to quote, read Writing for AI Search: What Actually Gets Cited.
2. Write clear definitions. Cited passages used definite language, like “X is Y,” nearly twice as often. A model can lift a definition whole and quote it.
3. Write headings as questions. Cited content was twice as likely to include a question mark. Buyers type questions into AI tools. A heading that matches the question gives the model an easy match.
4. Name real things. Heavily cited text was about 20.6% proper nouns. Typical text is 5 to 8%. Name the tool, the company, the study, the number. “Many teams” gives a model nothing to check.
5. Keep the reading level down. Cited passages scored around grade 16 on readability. Passages cited less often scored around grade 19.1. Both are hard reading. The simpler one still won.
6. Cover the whole topic cluster. In March 2026, Ahrefs found only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in Google’s top 10 for that query. The sample was 863,000 keyword results and 4 million AI Overview URLs. Ahrefs links this to fan-out, where Google splits one question into many smaller searches and cites pages that do well across the set (Ahrefs, March 2026). For B2B SaaS, that means a cluster of linked pages that answers the buyer’s next five questions.
One caveat on check 6: Ahrefs says it also improved how it detects citations since its July 2025 study, which found 76%. Part of the drop comes from better measurement.
7. Publish key answers on YouTube too. In the same Ahrefs study, YouTube made up 5.6% of all AI Overview citations. It was 18% of citations from pages that did not rank for the query. A short video that answers the same question gives you a second way in.
Technical checks: can AI tools reach your page?
If a crawler cannot reach the page, nothing in the content checks matters.
8. Make sure the page is indexed and can show a snippet. Google only pulls AI Overview and AI Mode sources from pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet in normal search (Google Search Central). Check the page in Search Console with URL Inspection. Look for stray noindex or nosnippet tags left by a plugin or a past redesign.
9. Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a different crawler. It collects training data. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI crawler docs). Many security plugins and CDNs block bots by default, so open the live robots.txt file and read it.
10. Skip the shortcuts. Google says you do not need AI text files, new machine-readable files or special schema to appear in its AI features (Google Search Central). That includes llms.txt. Spend that hour on check 1.
Measurement checks: how do you know it is working?
You track AI visibility in two places today, and both have gaps.
11. Turn on Bing’s AI Performance report. Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in beta on February 10, 2026. It shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI summaries and some partner tools. It also shows sample “grounding queries” the AI used to find you (Search Engine Land). It does not show clicks. Use it to see which pages get cited, then study what those pages do right.
12. Read Search Console with the right lens. Google reports AI Overview and AI Mode traffic inside the normal Performance report, under the “Web” search type. There is no separate AI filter (Google Search Central). So watch for this pattern: impressions go up while clicks stay flat. That often means you are being shown in AI answers more than you are being clicked.
For ChatGPT and Perplexity, check your analytics referral report for visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Then ask those tools your buyer’s top 10 questions once a month and log who gets cited.
FAQ
Does the click drop hit every kind of search? Not equally. In the Agarwal and Sen study, the effect was strongest on informational searches, which made up 71% of the sample (PPC Land). The study also only covered desktop Chrome users in the US. Mobile and other countries may behave differently.
Are the clicks you still get from AI Overviews worth less? Google says they are worth more. It reports that people who click from results pages with AI Overviews spend more time on the site (Google Search Central). Google has not published the data behind that claim, so test it against your own analytics.
Most of GEO is a writing job
Seven of these 12 checks are about how you write. The model quotes the page that answers first, in plain words, with real names and numbers. Most B2B SaaS blogs can fix that this week, with no new tools.
